Plans for a fourth Countdown supermarket in Palmerston North have taken a step forward.
Palmerston North City Council has notified the resource consent for a store on Pioneer Highway.
Countdown general manager for property Adrian Walker said the $16
million development would bring the total number of Countdown staff in
the city to 360.
"We're very pleased to have put forward a proposal for a $16m
supermarket on Pioneer Highway that will create up to 100 jobs in
Palmerston North and engage dozens of local construction and building

The proposed 2800-square-metre store is planned for the site of the
former Kia Toa clubrooms and Awapuni Motor Hotel complex.
The resource consent includes provision for a roundabout on Pioneer
Highway. The supermarket would be stage one of the redevelopment of the
site, which isnow bare.
Stage two would be a 1925sqm retail and commercial development with space for between 10 and 15 businesses.
The resource consent application says stage two would happen at a
time when it is economically viable to develop by another, as yet

Timing is subject to a resource consent being received and any
appeals. The resource consent can be viewed at the city council's office
and website. Submissions can be made until 5pm on September 19.
