Man armed with screwdriver robs supermarket

A man armed with a screwdriver robbed a New World in Wellington this morning, but was chased down by the supermarket's staff.

Police say the man walked into the New World on Riddiford Street in Newtown before 9.40am and threatened staff with the tool, before running off with a cash drawer.

Staff chased the man and caught him in the supermarket carpark, holding him there until police arrived.

Some staff have minor injuries from trying to restrain the man.

The cash drawer was recovered, as was the screwdriver.

A 35-year-old man was arrested and will appear in the Wellington District Court on Monday.

Police say the nature of the charges is not yet confirmed.
